Filipendula rubra – she is the queen of the prairie and the queen of my heart, these days. Just as I’m thinking this misbegotten meadow ought to be mowed down, she begins dancing above the sea of weedish greenery. She reminds me the meadow’s best time is yet to come.
From an old blue chair, you can watch filipendula basking in the morning sun.
A versatile queen, filipendula also does well in the mixed purple border, mixing nicely here with clematis, lambs ears, monarda and flowering shrubs r.rugosa and buddleia.
Closer to the house, filipendula punctuates the front bed with height and cotton candy froth.
Filipendula loves wet feet, so does fine in our heavy clay. She’s tall (no staking necessary), versatile and plays well with purple. A queen indeed.

Lovely. Long live the Queen!

Sounds like low-maintainance plant, and very attractive at the same time. I also like its height. It adds a lot of vertical interest to the garden. I love the views of your garden. It has an element of wildness! Very natural.

Love the last photo especially. I’ve planted Filipendula for a client on her streambank but I think there is too much shade for it to bloom as splendidly as your queen does.

Cyndy – WOW! Filipendula rubra is new to my garden world, but thanks to you – it’s now on my wishlist.
I’m looking for tall sturdy plants that will be tolerant of the Midwest’s clay-based conditions. Any other thoughts are VERY welcomed! Thanks! –Shyrlene
